Kinect VNC is a remote desktop server for Windows and macOS. This guide gets you from zero to a working encrypted remote session in about five minutes.
Step 1: Download and install
Head to the Downloads page and grab the installer for your platform:
- Windows MSI — for IT-managed deployments
- Windows NSIS installer — for personal installs
- macOS PKG — recommended, preserves permissions across upgrades
- macOS DMG — for development use
Run the installer and launch the app.
Step 2: Grant permissions (macOS only)
On macOS, Kinect VNC needs Screen Recording, Accessibility, and Input Monitoring permissions before it can capture and control your screen.
When prompted by the system, click Open System Preferences and toggle the permission on. The app guides you through each one.
Step 3: Set a password
Go to Security → Authentication Method and choose VNC Password. Enter a password in the field below.
Encryption is enabled by default — all connections will be encrypted automatically.
Step 4: Start the server
On the Dashboard, click Start Server. You'll see the status change to Running and your connection endpoints appear in the Connection Info card.
Copy the local IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.42:5900).
Step 5: Connect with a viewer
Open any standard VNC viewer — RealVNC Viewer, TigerVNC, TightVNC, or any other RFC 6143 compliant client.
Enter the address and password. You're connected.
Next steps
- Share a single window instead of your whole desktop
- Set up unattended access so the server starts automatically on boot
- Generate a session code for quick guest access without sharing your password
